1912年，在当的称得上有史以来最大的客轮"泰坦尼克号"从英国出发,首航横渡大西洋。这艘客轮曾被视为不会沉没的巨轮，因为即使是部密封舱被破坏，其余的仍能照常工作。不料，4月14日，"泰坦尼克号"与冰山相撞，5个密封舱进水，开始沉没，船上1517名乘客遇难，幸存、获救者仅712人。这个故事多次被搬上银幕。其情节大致如下：一位穷酸青年画家杰克·杜信赌赢了一张船票，乘船回家。他在甲板上见一女子要跳海自尽，他劝阻成功，两人慢慢地产生好感，直到那女子罗丝以身相许。船沉之时，他们彼此把生的机会让给对方。最后，杰克冻死于冰海，罗斯获救。这部影片采用了罗斯回忆往事的倒叙手法。
