这首歌由斯基特尔·戴维斯（Skeeter Davis)演唱
《给约翰的信》是一首曲调、内容并不令人激动的歌。整首歌实际上就五行歌词，重复了三遍。女主人公告诉约翰她恨写这样一封信，为的是通知他她再也不爱他了，她要另嫁他人，嫁给另一个约翰。这封信的内容在男主人公旁白后读出：男主人公正在国外战场上，此时战争结束，获得胜利。他欣喜雀跃，打开来信，却见后上所写不同于往常，女朋友向他索回自己的照片，然后她告诉他她要嫁给他的弟弟。
对于男主人公来说．他打赢了战争．却丢掉了爱情。他在国外战场上，为自己的国家而战。而在战争胜利时，女友离开他。他那个弟弟把哥哥的女友娶来做自己的妻子，这买在有悖于常理。然而东西方地域的不同，文化背景的差异也导致了人们观念的多样性，尤其是对待爱情，不同的国家，不同的民族有着不同的看法和观念。虽然我们会为约翰鸣不平，也难免对女主公的做法表示不满或对"另一个约翰"表示憎恨，但我们不能沿用中国传统的观念对外国人的行为或隐私妄加评断。但在中国，如果前方战士为国而战时，政府及社会都会给予他们崇高的荣誉以及爱倩、生活等方面无微不至的关怀。纵观国内的一些描写军人情感的歌曲如《十五的月亮》等都比《约翰的信》鼓舞人心，催人奋进。相比之下，我们更喜欢我国军人题材的一系列的抒情歌曲。本书收选此歌旨在给大家提供一点比较的素材，了解外国军人爱情生活或人际关系的一个侧面。
