wehadhaddiscussionsaboutgoingtohuashanwithsomegraduatestudentsfromcomputerscience.thatdidn’tworkoutduetochangesinschedulesonbothsides.also,theywereplanningtodotheclimbatnighttobeabletoreachthepeakatsunrise.thatdidnotappealtous.wewantedtospendanightonthemountain.fran’sdepartmentarrangedatripforus,makingreservationsatthesimplehotelonthenorthpeak.theysenttwograduatestudentstoaccompanyus,thoughtheyhadnotbeentohuashanbefore.wemetthemat8:00onsaturdaymorningandtookataxitothetrainstation.thereweaskedaroundandlocatedamini-bus.thebusmadeacoupleofstops.onewastoseeapresentationaboutthetraditionalmedicinesgrownonthemountainandachancetobuysomeofthem.itprobablywouldhavebeeninterestingifweunderstoodchinese.ourguidesgaveusthegeneraloutlineaboutwhatwassaid.theotherstopwasaquicklunchstop.

westartedtheclimbintheearlyafternoon.thepathconsistsofstonestepswithroughchainlinkhandrailsinthenarrowestareas(weworeourbicyclingglovesforhandprotection).physically,itismorelikeclimbingthestepsofaskyscraperthantrailsathome.however,thetemperaturewasabout95degreesandtherewasnotmuchshade.webroughtlotsofwater,includingsomebottlesthatwefrozeandsomegatoradethatwegotatthefancydepartmentstoreindowntownxian.thereareplentyofrefreshmentstandsalongthewaywhereyoucanbuybottledwater,thechineseequivalentofgatorade,andotherdrinksorsnacksatapremiumprice.

theplanforthedaywastoclimbtheotherfourpeaks,butwereservedtherighttoshortentheroute.thefirstpartwasasteepclimbtomiddlepeak.afterthelownorthpeak,alltheothersareatroughlyXXmeters.therewerecrowdsonthewaytomiddlepeak–mostlychinesehikersbutwedidseeafewotherwaiguo(foreigners)aswell.
wevisitedtwotaoisttemplesenroutetomiddlepeak.eachonehadanaltarwithincenseandofferingsoffruit.thefriendlymonksinvitedustosayaprayerortosendblessingstolovedones.franacceptedtheirinvitation.atthefirsttemple,shelitincensesticksandkneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarsayingasilentprayerforoursafejourneytothevarioussummitsofhuashan(theprayerwasanswered).atthesecondtemple,shekneltonacushioninfrontofthealtarandsentsilentblessingstoseveralfriendswhoareexperiencingchallengingsituationsintheirlivesatpresent.aftereachblessing,sheleanedforwardandthemonkstruckadrum.
aftermiddlepeak,thecrowdsgotmuchthinner.thenextwaseastpeak,whichhadasteepladderclimbingrock.franwasdubiousaboutthisascent,butrealizedthattheladderwasn’tsobadandwentforit.thatwasagooddecisionbecausewewerethenabletodoaloopandthetrailsgotalmostemptyatthispoint.afterskirtingthetopofacliffwithasteepdropoffonbothsides,wehadapleasantwalktosouthpeakandwestpeak.therewasevenasmallamountofdirttrail!thesummitofsouthpeakwasthehighestpointonhuashan,soofcourseweaskedanotherhikertotakeaphotoofourguidesandus.theviewsfromthetopsofeachpeakwerebeautiful.huashanandthesurroundingmountainsareveryruggedandremindussomewhatofhikinginthesouthwesternunitedstatesorthesierras.
wetookaroutethateventuallybroughtustothemainlinereturningdownfrommiddletonorthpeak.wewerehappytohaveascendedeachofthefivepeaks(petals)offlowermountain.
cablecar(thelongestinasia),itwasjust7minutesdowntotheparkentrance.wecaughtashuttlebusintotown,thentransferredtoabusforxian.
ourguidestoldusthatwehadwalkedupanddownatotalof4000stairs!weweregladthatwedidnothavethisinformationwhenwestarted.forthreedaysafterreturninghome,oursorelegmusclesinstructedustotaketheelevatortoourfifthfloorapartmentratherthanclimbingthestairs.
