FourkilometersawayfromtheeastpatofJi’an,KingHaotaiStoneTabletisbuiltinmemoryofthe19thKingofKoguryo,whosenameisGao’an.Heascendedthethronein391A.D.,whenhewas18anddiedin412A.D.Hehadbeenonthronefor22years.
TheStoneTabletdescribesvividlytheoriginanddevelopmentofKoguryo,andisthemostvaluablematerialforthestudyofitshistory.DuringthereignofKingHaotai,Koguryowasstrongandprosperous.HissonkingChangshoubuiltitinmemoryofhisfeats.Itis360meterstothenorthfromKingTaiTomb,andhasahistoryofover1,590years.
Theinscriptioncanbedividedintothreeparts.Thefirstpartisaboutthemythologyoftheoriginandstate-establishment.Itsays,“Thefounder,KingZoumu,wasfromnorthFuyuandhisfatherwasHeavenlyGodandhismotherGoddessofriver.Bornfromanegg,hewasinnatevirtue.Heledhissoldierssouthward,whenhegottothevalleyoftheFuRiverheturnedwestwardandsetupatownashiscapital.”
ThesecondpartrecordsKingHaotai’sexpansionofhisstate,fightingeastandwest.HeattackedtheKoreanandJapanesepiratesandhisassistancetoShilla.In396,hedefeatedJapanesepirates,conqueredPaekche,occupyingits64townsandover1,400villages.
Thethirdpartisaboutthetomb-keepers.Thereare330keepers,30ofthemcamefromtownsand300ofthemfromvillages.Theonlydifferencelayinthatthosefromtownsservedasaleaderof10villagers.
TheStoneTabletisbuiltwithapieceofnaturalbrecciascarvedalittlebitintheshapeofacolumn.ThiskindofmaterialwasproducedontheYaluRiverclosetoJi’an.Itmaintainednaturalpatternandwasrare.Theinscriptioniswritteninofficialscript,amongwhicheachcharacteris9to10cm.,nearlycarved,givingdignity.Itsstructureisstrict.TheStoneTablethas44linces,eachlineof41characters,and,775charactersaltogether.However,1,590charactersarerecognizableduetosomedamages.
Intheyearof427aftertheconstructionoftheStoneTablet,KoguryomoveditscapitaltoPyongyang.Afteritsreigncametoanend,itwasruined.In1877(the2ndyearofGuangxuReign,theQingDynasty),GuanYeshangfromHuairenCountydiscoveredit.Herubbedsomecharactersonitandgavethemtohisfriend.From1878to1879,acountyofficialaskedChuTianfu,anativetoremovethemossbymeansofcoatingdungontheStoneTabletandthenburningthem,sothatsomecharacterscouldbeeasilyrecognized.Ontheotherhand,itwasdamagedalittlebit,i.g.clearageappearedontheStoneTablet.
AftertheStoneTabletwasdiscovered,ithasbeenprotectedandpreserved.In1927,peopleonindustryandbusinessinJi’anCountyraisedfundstohaveapavilionbuilt.In1961,theStateCouncilproclaimeditanimportantreserveinthefirstgroup.In1982,thestateappropriatedtobuildanewpavilion.XiaNai,afamousarcheologistinscribedforit.In20xx,inordertoreinforceit,thelocalgovernmentinstalledawallofglasssurroundingit.
TheStoneTabletisresourcesforthestudyoftheoriginandevolutionofKoguryo,andanarttreasureonstonecarving.Sinceitscapitaltowns,kingtombsofnobles,andmausoleumofnoblesenteredthelistofWorldHeritageSites,KingHaotaiStoneTablet,knownasthebesttablettotheseaintheeast,nowisusheringinthetouristsathomeandabroadwiththeredcarpet.
